Our History

More than 50 years of milestones

From three staff in a small, Putāruru furniture store, to a growing network across the Waikato and Bay of Plenty, every chapter has helped shape the Van Dyks of today.

From humble beginnings

Van Dyk Furnishers was established in 1974 when Joe and Ali Van Dyk purchased Rex Mora Furnishers in Putāruru with just three staff, located on Princes Street.

In 1975, Isles & Burgess, the only other furnishing store in town, closed and Van Dyks relocated to Duke Street, expanding the furniture department.

Taking Van Dyks further

In the early 1980s, Van Dyks introduced mobile curtain and carpet showrooms, taking an extensive range of samples directly to customers’ homes throughout South Waikato.

In 1986, brothers Henry, John and Leighton purchased Van Dyks from their parents. They began expanding into nearby towns, with a vision to create one of New Zealand’s largest and most modern furniture and home furnishings showrooms outside the main city centres.
